PROJECTS

Integrating technology in the classroom is a good strategy to increase student engagement, assess student understanding and performance, and create interesting learning activities.  Below are some examples of such integration based on the assignments from the Innovation, Technology, and Teaching in Higher Education course.  These can apply to traditional, online asynchronous, or online synchronous learning environments.

TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

These thoughts on teaching with technology are an extension of my general teaching philosophy which includes a genuine appreciation for the uniqueness of the learner and an expectation that striving for excellence by the teacher and learner will result in new levels of personal awareness and skill acquisition as well as content knowledge.

INTERACTIVE SLIDE PRESENTATION

This Interactive Slide Presentation assignment was designed to practice writing and strategically placing polling questions into a presentation.  I used Poll Everywhere to include multiple choice, open ended, and dual choice questions.  Each example would generate discussion and can be used for pair-share conversations or full-group facilitated dialogue depending on the size of the group.

MINI LECTURE VIDEO

The purpose of this mini-lecture on Type and Communication was to demonstrate the use of active learning techniques in an online class lecture. By creating opportunities for students to collaborate with one another, engage in "dialogue" about the course material, and respond to questions we can foster the development of the learning community as well as assess students' understanding of the material.

WEB 2.0 ASSIGNMENT WITH RUBRIC

This assignment (Communication Plan based on Estimated Type) is an example of one that could be used in an online course at the mid-point of the semester.  By this time, students would be developing a sense of trust in the group and would have had successful collaborative conversations through the discussion board and voice thread activities.  The need for privacy will have decreased as trust increased for most students.  While it is a demanding assignment, it is being scaffolded on work completed in the previous weeks and should be accessible to all students.
